"Scotland"

"The Scottish Parliament-1"

This new Scottish Parliament building, designed by Catalan architect Enric Miralles,

has since September 2004, been the official home of the Scottish Parliement.

The new Parliament is situated at the end of Royal Mile, in the Holyrood are

of Edinburgh, and opposite Holyrood Palace.

Many people looking at the decoration of the Scottish Parliament building think that it looks

like pistols, or hairdryers, however I have been told by the locals that they are curtains.

I myself get a "James Bond" kind of feeling when looking at the building, and what

would be more suitable actually, thinking of Sir Sean Connery who was born 1930

in Edinburgh.

"Princes Street-Edinburgh"

When travelling to Edinburgh as a tourist you will find many beautiful places to visit, if

you want to spend some time with shopping, you will find many excellent shops here

along the Prince Street and when the weather is fine you can easily find your way down

to the Princes Street Gardens which is situated opposite the shops. Another unique

thing, at least I have not seen this before, but along the Park side of the Princes Street

and besides the walk path in the beautiful Park, you will find several Park Benches

which have different dedications engraved on an attached plaquette.

If you want to have a look around in the Edinburgh area, you will find many different

bus routes which you can catch here along the Princes Street. You can buy a one

day bus ticket and have a good look around jumping on and off different buses.

If you want to go to the sea, you can take the bus which takes you to Porto Bello.


"Memorial Monument Stone"

During your walk through the Park, you might spot this memorial monument.

It was erected 1978 in remembrance of the Hospitality-Friendship and Hope

which the soldiers were graced with from the Scottish people during a very

dark and stressful time. Something that all of us visiting the country today

also will find, so I am taking this oppurtunity to send a special greeting to

all of my Scottish friends which I have met on my journeys to Scotland.

After taking a walk in the beautiful park, you might want to visit some more shops,

you can then walk towards The National Galleries of Scotland and then follow the

street "the Mound" then head to N Bank Street, then turn right to Bank Street

which leads you up to the Royal Mile, and if you want to have something to eat

two of my favourite restaurants at the Royal Mile is;

Here you will find an excellent food and a very warm welcome!

"The Edinburgh Castle"

After a nice lunch at some one of the many excellent restaurants at the Royal Mile,

you might want to experience some of Edinburghs Historic places, and I can highly

recommend to enter the Castle and to have a look around. I have both walked around

in the many different parts of the castle which is very nice but I have also taken the

tour where you use a recorder unit with a headphone and you will be able to listen

to the historical background along the way. A very practical way and you are able

to "skip" listen to information if you do not feel that part is of interest for yourself.

The view from the area around the castle are amazing and you can use the stone

wall to put your camera on ( don't have to use your tripod if you want to travel light)

At the late spring and during the summer you are able to sit down here

and enjoy a wonderful ice-cream and the stunning view of the castle.

You can also bring a blanket and your own picnick hamper and find a

lovely spot on the lawn in the Park.


"Edinburgh Castle "

Edinburgh Castle is a castle fortress which dominates the skyline of Edinburgh city,

from its position on the top of the volcanic Castle Rock.

If you decide to stay in the Park, you can have a look around and experience so many

beautiful trees and rhododendron, in May/June you will find them overloaded with

beautiful flowers in various colours, so if you are interested in gardens then you have

to spend some time here, and do not forget to bring your camera and perhaps your

tripod to get even better result. These photos are taken when hand-held so next time

I will visit Scotland at this time of the year, I will bring my tripod and spend some time

taking shots in the park.

Another beautiful view and I am sure that you will find many many

more when visiting the Park. The weather changes very often in

Scotland so remember to bring something to cover your camera

gear with if it will begin to rain. Next time I will bring a polarize filter

which reduces reflections from some surfaces, can darken the sky

and eliminates unwanted reflections.

Truly amazing view, the rhododendron was so very beautiful, so many different

colours and the landscape was stunning with the many fresh green shades.

This is a very beautiful view of the Castle with the amazing Ross Fountain in the front,

and the history behind the fountain is also very interesting, look at the next photo. I

very often take photos of the information placard when visiting new historical places.

When I am back home again, I can take time to look at the photos again, read the

information once more and then search for more information on the internet. This

is very practical since very often you have a very tight schedule with lots of new

information to digest, this way you can look at it again when you are home again.

The four upper figures(you only see two on this photo) depict science,

Art, Poetry and Industry. At the top the beautifully sculptured figure

which holds a cornucopia-cup of plenty. The figures were sculpted

by Jean-Baptiste Klagmann

If you decided to enter the Edinburgh Castle you will discover many

beautiful angles from the top of the Castle Rock and when you spot

St Margaret´s Chapel which is the oldest building in Edinburgh, please

enter the tiny Chapel where you truly can feel the wings of history.

Margaret was born around 1045, into the royal family of England, and

fled after the Norman invastion to the court of Malcolm III of Scotland.

They fell in love and were married at Dunfermline.

When Malcolm and his eldest son Edward were killed, Margaret took to her

bed in Edinburgh Castle and died from a broken heart. The Chapel was built

by her youngest son, King David I. The Chapel has not always been used for

worship, from the 16th to the 18th centry it was used as a gunpowder store.

In 1250, Mary was canonised as St Margaret of Scotland, for her many acts

of piety and charity in her adopted country.

The high "dark" tower at the left is Sir Walter Scott Monument, and it is possible to

actually climb the 287 steps and to have a look at the beautiful view from the top.The

high clock tower is the Balmoral. Next high tower is the Nelson monument, situated on

Calton Hill. In the foreground you see "the building where The National Galleries

of Scotland is situated, behind that building you can see Waverley Bridge, where

the double decker round tour buses starts at, and further behind that you can see

the North Bridge. Edinburgh railway station is situated at Waverley and the sea in

the background is Northern sea and firth of Forth.

"It was breathtaking to walk along the side of the Esplanade, many local people were out taking photos of this

unique weather conditions, those who I spoke with had never in their life seen these kind of waves, I was

happy to be there with my Olympus 850SW, which is waterproof, so I did not have to worry about my gear.
