Wild Boar kept in captivity in the wild life
enclosure at ÖsterMalma

I took these shots below at ÖsterMalma, where a small group of wild boars
are kept in one of the wild life enclosures. It was interesting to see these rather
large animals at close range. The wild boar is a cloven-hoofed animal, which
lived in Sweden, probably up until the middle ages. The wild boar was hunted
as vermin in arable land and also bred with domestic pigs when they were out
for pannage in the woodlands.

Wild boar (also wild pig, Sus scrofa)

Thirty years ago they returned to the wild in Sweden and are breeding very
quickly. The sows can give birth to their 4-8 piglets at almost any time of the year.

In the early days she looks after them in a nest she is also prepared to defend. The
piglets have a characteristic stripy coat

The wild boar is an omnivore with plants, roots eggs, voles and leverets on the menu. Insect larvae
also make up a huge components of their diet. Where they root scarifies the ground and is excellent
for favouring the establishment of tree-seedlings.

Wild boars live in groups with an experienced sow as their leader. Old boars live alone. The
boar can be 1 meter tall and weight almost 300 kg, the sows are smaller.

Wild boars are shy and have a sensitive sense of smell and well developed hearing. That is why
they are very rarely seen. It is more common to see where they have been rooting on the ground.
